Details Introduction

Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) utilizes the heat effect of electric current for welding, belonging to cold working process, with higher efficiency. The process is as follows:


 

Raw Material Preparation
  • Cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel strips are used, with higher surface quality requirements (thorough removal of oil stains and scale) to avoid the formation of pores during welding.
  • The steel strip is rolled and flattened to eliminate internal stress and ensure forming stability.
Continuous Forming
  • The steel strip is gradually bent into a tubular shape by multiple forming rollers, with the seam tightly fitted (gap ≤ 0.1mm), creating conditions for resistance welding.
  • During the forming process, the seam alignment is precisely controlled by guiding devices to ensure accurate welding position.
Resistance Welding
  • High-frequency current (usually 100-500kHz) is applied to the tube blank seam through electrodes, utilizing the metal resistance to generate heat, causing the seam to rapidly heat up to a plastic state (approximately 1300-1400℃, not completely melted).
  • Simultaneously, pressure is applied through squeeze rollers, allowing the metal atoms at the seam to diffuse and bond, forming a solid-state weld (without filler material).
  • Immediately after welding, the weld seam is water-cooled to control the heat affected zone (HAZ) range and prevent grain growth.
Weld Heat Treatment (Optional)
  • Some high-specification steel pipes require weld annealing: the weld area is heated to 700-800℃ and slowly cooled to eliminate welding stress and improve weld toughness.
Finishing and Surface Treatment
  • In-furnace welded steel pipe process: straightening, fixed-length cutting, weld seam finishing (resistance welding seams are usually thin and polishing can be omitted).
  • Galvanizing or black pipe treatment methods are consistent with furnace welding.
Quality Inspection
  • In addition to conventional hydrostatic tests and visual inspections, resistance welded steel pipes require additional Ultrasonic testing of the weld seam to detect internal defects such as lack of fusion and slag inclusion.
  • In some cases, Flattening test is performed: the steel pipe is flattened to 1/3 of its outer diameter, and no cracks in the weld seam indicates that it is qualified, verifying the weld ductility.
